The oval was one of the first aluminum carabiners manufactured in the US in the 1960s. It is a classic, traditional carabiner, a functional design that has stood the test of time. A major benefit of using a "true" oval carabiner is that it is very difficult to load incorrectly and the forces tend to "self-equalize" between the anchor, main line, and ratchet tightening system. Balancing the load equally on the spine and the gate allows the carabiner to maintain full strength under a variety of conditions.
