The major advantage of locking carabiners is that when properly engaged the locking mechanism can prevent the carabiner gates from accidentally opening during jump trick or when the line is quickly released. A gate opening SIGNIFIGANTLY reduces the strength of the carabiner and could lead to a hardware failure.

Another advantage of using a "true" oval carabiner is that it is very difficult to load incorrectly and the forces tend to "self-equalize" between the anchor, main line, and ratchet tightening system. Balancing the load equally on the spine and the gate allows the carabiner to maintain full strength under a variety of conditions.
